Regional media during the COVID 19 pandemic (TRP report from the second week of August 2019) :-

Regional media refers to the media that is being confined to a specific geographical area for the people of that area which serves the purpose of delivering the news to the local citizens present there. Regional media channels also help people who do not understand Hindi or English to get daily news from their locality and in their state in the language that they speak .For example, a regional news channel in Bangalore, Karnataka will be of Kannnada language. The veiwership of regional news in India is higher than Hindi news channels for those particular regions but since Hindi media channels are seen across the whole country it has an overall higher National veiwership. Some of the popular media channels that are prevalent in Karnataka are Zee kannada, TV9 Kannada, Public Tv , Suvarna news, News 18 Kannada.

Today we will talk about some of  the different regional news channels that are present in Karnataka and how compare the TRP of the top 5 popular media  channels and TV shows in Karnataka which also includes the regional news channels.

Broadcast  Audience research council (BARC) currently measures the television points and publishes the same every Thursday, we saw Sun network channel Udaya TV led the chart during the COVID 19 crisis and lockdown.

Firstly in media we have to look at the top 5 Kannada channels and programs which was led by ZEE Kannada with 3019416 TRP points followed by Udaya TV with 279978 TRP points. Third came in Star Suvarna followed by Colours Kannada and Udaya movies with. TRP of 185917, 181647 and 125916 respectively. So it was seen that Udaya  Television Rating Points or TRP is calculated by using the denominator as the total number of target audience, and the total impressions delivered to this audience in the numerator  x 100. It was seen that whenever ZEE Kannada had a television show people used to tune in as it’s veiwership is high when we look at the TRP when compared to the number of impressions delivered to the audience which was less in the other channels. The show named  Naagini 2 had the highest TRP of all programs which stood at with a TRP of 5031 Out of the top 5 tv shows that had the highest TRP, 4 of them were shows that were telecasted in Karnataka TV while the only show that was on the list was placed 2nd which is a movie telecasted in UDAYA TV which goes by the name of Anjani Putra, Anjani Putra was shown to have a TRP of 4404. The other three shows were Now if we look at the Kannada news channels during the COVID 19 crisis Gatti Mela, Jothe Jotheyali and Yaree Nee Mohini which were telecasted in Kannada TV had a TRP of 3872, 3808 and 3659 respectively. This only shows the dominance that Kannada TV had over other channels. The good tv shows telecasted were one of the main reasons for Kannada TV to gain such popularity amongst other Kannada regional media channel A high TRP for a show means that higher number of people used to tune in to watch that particular tv show

The top 5 news channels  consisted of TV9 Kannada, Public TV, Suvarna News, News 18 Kannada and Dighvijay 24 x 7 news. TV9 Kannada led the TRP charts with 171620 points which was followed by Public TV, Suvarna News, News 18 Kannada and Dighvijay 24 x 7 with 92612,73478, 42708 and 27430 respectively . This says that TV9 produces news content that are important for the people and that is the reason for their higher viewership

Such high TRPs for regional media channels show that till this day people need regional channels to a very large extent as India still has a lot of people who do not know other languages while there are also people who prefer watching regional media channels over English or Hindi media channels simply because they embrace and respect their language a lot. Watching regional media channels also helps in a much more clear understanding for people who are not that much familiar with other languages, understand the weight and how important of the news that is being telecasted and how it can impact their lives, it also gives them the essence that they stick by their roots and listen to the media provided to them in their regional language. Below is the graph provided for the TRP of the top 5 news and TV channels and TV shows in Karnataka which is in their regional language :-

Air pollution

Air pollution and why is it harmful

Air pollution refers to the pollution created in the atmosphere by humans for their physical or monetary needs. Any substance that alters the natural properties of the atmosphere, whether it be chemical, physical, or biological, is considered an air pollutant. Air pollution can occur indoors or outdoors.  We often forget that the world we live in is not just meant for us but every other organism living here. Air pollution modifies the environment in such a way that it changes the natural charecteristics of the atmosphere. Air pollution is mainly causes due to selfish human need, we need to stop this and make the atmospheres better and a safer place to breath in. The locality that I stay near is called Bannerghatta and is situated in Bangalore. The air pollution here has gotten a bit out of hand due to many underlying factors  prompting the students to fall sick in return very often.

People affected by this sir pollution:-

Since the area that I stay in has a lot of colleges nearby, it is mainly a student area with Pgs, hostels and student accommodation flats all around. Youth is considered to be the future of our country, but with such bad atmosphere conditions it is clearly visible that the air that we breath here is not completely safe and can deplete one’s health.  Many of my friends have also faced breathing problems and dust allergy whilst walking the streets of Bannerghatta. People also tend to fall sick more often. The air quality Index of Bannerghatta is also considered to be AQI95 pure

Why is the pollution happening:-

There is not one main cause of this pollution in our area but this has been building for ages and if we do not take any strict action right away, this is only going to increase in the upcoming years. But if we start pointing out the on going factors which has resulted in such a decrease in the quality of the air we are breathing in our locality there are plenty right now and these factors are mainly caused by humans for their own needs and in the process to modernize a city, an environment is getting destroyed. The locals around who have been living for so many years have said that earlier Bannerghatta was a beautiful place with long roads and a lake. Due to the increased pollution, the Hulimavu lake in Bannerghatta has also dried up. This air pollution is mainly happening due to underlying reasons like the huge traffic and so many on road vehicles. The huge traffic releases more gas from the exhaust and hence it gets spread into the atmosphere around us. The traffic has increased so much nowadays that people do not get any space to walk and the exhaust coming out of the car makes the atmosphere even hotter . One more main reason is the construction of the metro that is being going on for around 7 years according to a local. This metro construction has broken up so many roads with various construction activities like land clearing, operation of diesel engines, demolition, burning, and working with toxic materials contribute to air pollution. The people working in these constructions have to go through harsh body and weather conditions among so many machines working between them takes a negative turn on their health causing many diseases. Apart from the metro construction there are also many new construction sites that are being built in this area because more students are coming here to live as this place is getting completely urbanized. According to the locals, Bannerghatta and Hulimavu especially before was no that much urbanized and were mainly considered to be the outskirts of the city. But now due to the arrival of new students and setting up of new colleges, more and more students are accomodating near Hulimavu to stay and complete their education or work for a job, because of that new buildings and constructions are being done in that area.

Conclusion

We can conclude that Hulimavu has serious air polution conditions and it is upto us, the youth to take a control over it over the upcoming years by encouraging people to do and follow certain activities to play their parts and not be a problem like cycling and not using cars, the usage of public transport and many other factors which causes pollution in the air.
